Janice Ina Vanderlaan of Mount Enterprise passed away peacefully Friday, September 1, 2017, at her home at the age of 76 years, 2 months, and 18 days.

She was born June 14, 1941, in Amarillo, Texas, to parents Frank J. Gordon and Gladys Ina (Williams) Gordon.

Jan was a proud nurse her entire life. She graduated from Tascosa High school in Amarillo in 1958. She then went on to earn her Master's Degree in nursing from West Texas State University. She retired as a nursing instructor from Stephen F. Austin State University after proudly serving for twenty years. Her thirst for knowledge helped her through her studies. She would often read to learn something new, including reading the dictionary to seek out new words.

Mrs. Vanderlaan was a special and unique individual who did not walk the same path as others. Her sense of humor and wit went unmatched by many. She was very intelligent and fun, and her children felt that they could talk to her about anything. Jan was a very good person who would never intentionally hurt anyone in her life.

Mrs. Vanderlaan was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Thomas Vanderlaan; and sister, Lynn Ann Ouimet.

She is survived by her sons, Charles M. Schmidt and his children and family of Denver, Colorado; and David Schmidt and his children of Mount Enterprise, Texas; daughter, Cathy McDonald and her children and family of Minot, North Dakota; and numerous nieces, nephews, great grandchildren, other relatives, and dear friends.

A private service will take place at a later date.

The family wishes to thank Amy Allen and the wonderful staff of Harbor Hospice for their kindness, compassion, and dignity shown to their mother.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorial donations be made in Mrs. Vanderlaan's name to your local no-kill animal shelter.
