Reflection of Life-

Janie Lucille Franklin, 84, passed away at home with her family by her side on Saturday, July 29, 2017. She was born to the late George Harris Sr. and Maude Luvease (Smith) Harris, on May 6, 1933, in McWilliams, AL. Janie graduated from J. F. Shields High School and was the Class Salutatorian in 1951. Janie received a B.S. from Tuskegee University in Alabama in 1955. She continued her education of post-graduate studies at Arizona State University, Washington University in St. Louis, St. Mary's University in Morago, and Dominican University in San Rafael, Sonoma State University, and U.C. Berkeley in California. She married her husband in 1955, and they lived together in Novato, California, since 1967.

Janie was an elementary and high school teacher with the Novato United School District until she retired. She was passionate about making a difference in the lives of her students. She taught at Loma Verde Elementary, Pacheco Elementary, Hill Jr. High School, and she was a Mentor and Computer Instructor for the Novato Unified School District's Teacher Training Program.

Janie was an active member for over 20 years with the Xi Eta Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority in Novato, CA. She was also an active member in the Order of Eastern Star located in Beatrice, AL. Janie was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She enjoyed spending time with her family. Her interests were gardening, sewing, cooking, music, computers, and reading. She loved to travel with her husband who was in the military for 26 years, and visited many cities within their lifetime.

Janie is survived by her loving husband of 62 years: Herbert Franklin; two children: Vincent Franklin (Margie) of Novato, CA; Yolanda Franklin-Watts (Johnny) of Round Lake Beach, IL; two sisters: Joyce Armstrong (Willie) of Montgomery, AL; Ruby Hill (Malcolm) of Laurel, MD; two brothers: George Harris (Eunice) of Birmingham, AL; James Harris (Janice) of Columbus, GA; and a Brother-in-Law: Matthew Scott of Birmingham, AL. She is survived by six grandchildren: Julio Franklin, Moses Franklin (Krystal), Andrea Watts, Alyssa Watts, Reina Franklin, Alanna Watts, and seven great-grandchildren: Moses Franklin Jr, Emily Franklin, Ariana Franklin, Ally Franklin, Baily Franklin, Javion Han, and Mia Han. Janie also has many loving nephews, nieces, relatives, in-laws, and friends; she was preceded in death by the following siblings: Myrtle White, Mary Scott, Willie L. Harris, and Willie R. Harris.
