Jean was born on November 24, 1927, Thanksgiving Day, in Rock Island, IL, the daughter of Jerry Grissom and Edmonia Swancy Grissom. She grew up in Rock Island and graduated from Rock Island Senior High. Jean married Wesley E. Cooper in 1955. The union produced six children: Kenneth E. (Gladys), Cheryl A., Cynthia A., Lynn M. (Thomas), Carol Ann, and Wesley K.

She worked at Abrahms Department Store in Davenport, the Rock Island Arsenal, and retired after 18 years of service as a House Mother from Arrowhead Ranch where she provided positive parental influence to wayward boys. Several years after her retirement, young men would see her on the street, hug her and thank her for the positive difference she made in their lives.

Jean is survived by a sister, Ramona, in Moline; a brother, Roger, in Los Angeles; children, Kenneth, Cheryl, Cynthia, Lynn, and Carol Ann; grandchildren Karl, Sheila, and Alexander; and great grandchildren, Kayla, Kuron, and Kaleb.
