Jeanie Mason, 72, of Sugar Land, passed away on Friday, June 16, 2017. Jeanie Mason was born to Wesley and Julia Matheny in Espanola, New Mexico on June 4, 1945. Jeanie was the fifth of six siblings. Norm and Jeanie were married in March of 1966. Norm's mother, Lucile, would be a special part of Jeanie's life until Lucile passed away in 2009. Jeanie committed her life to Christ as a young girl and was baptized at First Baptist Church in Espanola, New Mexico. She graduated from Espanola High School in 1963 and was accepted to the University of New Mexico but was unable to afford to go to college. After high school, she moved to Pampa, Texas in the Texas Panhandle to live with her sister and brother-in-law in a small apartment behind their garage. She worked as a nurse's aide in the local hospital while attending cosmetology school. In July of 1965, Norm was hired by Texaco as a petroleum engineer after graduating from the University of Arkansas; his first job was in Pampa. Jeanie and Norm first met in December of 1965 and were married three months later in March of 1966. During those early years of the marriage, they lived in Odessa, Texas where their daughter Angie was born. Later they moved in Wichita Falls, then to Midland in west Texas where their son, Steve, was born. In July of 1976 they moved to Fort Bend County. Jeanie was an active volunteer in the community during their children's school years, serving in PTO board positions and helping to form the PTO at the newly-opened Clements High School. As a member of Sugar Creek Baptist Church, Jeanie served as chairman and group leader of Joy of Living Bible Studies, director of Vacation Bible School, and was involved in Women's Ministry at Sugar Creek Baptist Church, serving as chairman of the ministry. Her artistic abilities were evident in her beautifully-decorated cakes enjoyed by many as well as painting, sewing, and the photo collages she loved to create. Jeanie, along with her husband, Norm, was involved in local and state government for years, attending many senatorial and state conventions and, along with Norm, two National Conventions. She served for a time as a Precinct Chairman and was a co-founder and longtime member of the Spirit of Freedom Republican Women's Club. She also served as president of the Fort Bend Republican Women's Club and received Woman of the Year honors. Jeanie had no hesitation in speaking to others about her struggles with cancer. She was an encouragement to many over the years in the way she faced her trials with faith and hope in the Lord. Norm and Jeanie celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary in March of this year. Jeanie is survived by her husband, Norm; and two children: Angie Brennan and her husband Terry of Gambrills, Maryland; and Stephen Mason and his wife Sharron of Hot Springs, Arkansas; grandchildren John, Paul, and Caroline Brennan, Siobahn Hruby, and Amanda Johnson, and great-grandchildren Stella and Scarlett Hruby. A Memorial service will be held on Thursday, June 22nd, 2017 at 11:00 A.M. at Sugar Creek Baptist Church located at 13223 SW Freeway, Sugar Land, Texas.
