Jerry Lee Gum, 77, of Waynesboro, passed away on Saturday, November 18, 2017 at his home.
Jerry was born on February 22, 1940 to Wilbur and Pauline Gum of Waynesboro. He was a 1957 graduate of Wilson Memorial High School and a 1961 graduate of the University of Virginia. Jerry also served his country as a member of the U.S. National Guard. He worked as an Engineer at DuPont for 31 years, starting in 1966 until his retirement in 1997. Jerry was an avid history buff.
In addition to his parents, Jerry was also preceded in death by his wife, Sarah Spangler Gum.
Jerry is survived by a son, Paul Gum and wife, Kay and daughter, Suzanne Hite and husband, Chris, and his sweetheart, Joyce Hall. He is also survived by a brother, Frank Gum and wife, Donna, and by six grandchildren, Jessica Dempsey and partner, Steve, Emily Rankin and husband, Alex, Patrick Hite, Bryan Hite, Amanda Gum, and Sara Gum, and one great-grandson, Joseph Sharp. Also missing Jerry is his faithful pup, Pete.
At Jerry's request, he will be cremated with no graveside service or family viewing. There will be a memorial service held at a later date.
Memorials may be given to either the UVA Cancer Center in Charlottesville or the HOPE Center in Fishersville.
The family of Jerry Gum wishes to extend our sincerest appreciation to the cancer teams at both UVA Hospital and Augusta Medical Center and to Robby Varner for all his support and care.
