Jessie A. Michalowski Obituary

October 6, 1924 - March 16, 2017

Jessie A. Michalowski, 92, entered eternal rest on Thursday, March 16, 2017. She was born in Norwich on October 6, 1924 to the late Walter and Mary (Jaczynski) Michalowski. She was very active in the Norwich community for many years.

Jessie started her banking career in the mortgage department of the former Norwich Savings Society and retired as a Vice-President from People's United Bank. She helped many in the area as they made their most important purchase in life, a home. People always appreciated her willingness to work out details and simplify a process.

After her retirement, she volunteered almost every day at the former Saint Joseph s School in Norwich. The faculty, staff and children became her "second family". She enjoyed seeing the children grow and was quite pleased to be called "Miss Jessie". It gave her such delight to be part of the school.

Jessie was a graduate of the Class of 1942 at Norwich Free Academy and, although a very good student, her parents did not have the means to send her on for higher education. She maintained a 60+ year relationship with six other female graduates meeting once a month for conversation, laughter and just a good time.

Jessie enjoyed travelling to Europe, Hawaii and other destinations and with her friends on AARP trips. She especially looked forward to Thanksgiving with her niece Mary Kassel's family in Florida. She relished summers with her family at Pleasure Beach where she rented a cottage with her sister Jenny.

Singing was an important part of her life. She was an active member in the women's barbershop organization, Laurel-Aires, and sang every Sunday with the choir at Saint Joseph's Church. She was a long-time member of the Rose City Bowling League, Norwich AARP, served as secretary of the Zachae Memorial Fund and was always willing to volunteer her services.

Jessie was a supporter of the Boston Red Sox and was so proud to have entered a contest and won a baseball autographed by her idol, Ted Williams. She was a passionate UCONN Women's Basketball fan and everyone knew not to bother her when a game was on.

Holidays with family and friends were special to her especially hosting with her sister Catherine the annual Easter breakfast. She enjoyed giving and receiving presents. She delighted in her own birthday parties and made sure that people didn't forget when her birthday was.

If Jessie was your friend, she was your friend for life. Jessie was always willing to help anyone and was devoted to her family for whom she would do anything. She is survived by her nine nephews and nieces, fifteen great nephews and nieces, also, thirteen great grand nephews and nieces and a special friend Helen Romano who was like a sister to Jessie and her siblings.

Jessie was predeceased by her brothers and sisters Sophie Misarski, John Michalowski, Genevieve Przybysz, Ted Michalowski, Helen Raab and Catherine Piechowski.

The family would like to thank the staff of Bayview Health Care Center in Waterford who looked after Jessie in her final years.
