Joan Marie Barnes was born on December 30, 1952, to Alexander Barnes and Majorie DeSouza in Kingston, Jamaica. She was raised by her Uncle Alfonso and Grandmother Jane in Denhamtown alongside her other relatives. Joan went on to have three daughters before migrating to the United States in 1979 where she was reunited with her mother in D.C. She started working as an assistant food service director at a nursing home. It was there when she began her 30-year career in food service.

In the following years, she met the love of her life and best friend, Aldric Cobbler. On September 8, 1984 they were married and soon after Joan gave birth to her fourth daughter. As soon as she was able, Joan sent for her three daughters back in Jamaica and the blended family settled into their present home in Wheaton, MD.
