Joan E. Katan, of Granby, CT passed away on March 26, 2018 while on her way down to her beloved horse barn. Daughter of John and Onnolee Ensor, Joan was born in Baltimore, MD. She attended the University of Connecticut and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture in 1951. While at UConn, she was active in the outing club where she met many lifelong friends including her husband Charles J. Katan, whom she married on May 15, 1958. Her love of horses started when as a child, she would follow a mounted Officer in Brooklyn on her tricycle and sit on his horse during breaks. Although much of her family considered riding too dangerous, her grandfather would sneak her off to riding lessons, thus beginning Joan’s lifelong love of horses and the outdoors. Perhaps Joan is best known by many as the woman who taught them how to ride. However she taught so much more than riding; she taught hundreds how to communicate with and care for animals, love the natural world, and develop their self-confidence. Throughout her life, she maintained a close connection to many of the students she mentored and guided through childhood and beyond. Joan is survived by her husband of 60 years, Charlie, extended family, and dear friends. A memorial to celebrate the amazing life she and Charlie shared will be held from 1:30 to 3:30 on July 1, 2018, at Holcomb Farm, 113 Simsbury Road, West Granby, CT 06090. In lieu of flowers please donate in her honor to the local charity of your choice.
