Joan M. Shula, 74, of Anthem, Arizona passed away peacefully with family by her side on March 6th, 2018. Joan was born in Cleveland, Ohio on June 10, 1943 to Anthony and Mollie (Duale) Klasson. She attended Reginia High School in South Euclid, Ohio and went onto college at Notre Dame College. Joan married her beloved companion, James "Jim" Shula in 1977. Joan and Jim relocated from Ohio to Illinois, where they resided for 35 years, and raised their five children. Joan was a devout Catholic and was an active member of St. Anne?s Catholic Church in Oswego, Illinois. Throughout her life Joan was known as a very hard worker with her employers. In 2003, Joan was hired as an insurance underwriter and worked alongside her husband, Jim. She retired in 2010 and two years later fulfilled her dream of moving to the Southwest. Joan and Jim found a home in Anthem, Arizona where they enjoyed the community and made several friends. She was also a member at St. Rose Philippine Duchesne Parish and attended mass every Sunday. Joan never missed a Kentucky Derby, she loved her hometown of Cleveland, enjoyed murder mystery shows and was known to appreciate a good book. Her family was her cornerstone. Joan always put her children first and took pride in each one of them. Family trips to Ohio to visit relatives were a regular summer event. She was the most loving mother and grandmother. She had an unforgettable laugh that just made you smile. Joan is survived by her loving husband of 40 years, James Shula; 5 children: Christine (Michael) Brickert, Stephen (Erica) Shula, Matthew (Jennifer) Shula, Maureen (Jeremy) Miller and Molly (Trevor) Clancy; 22 grandchildren: Joshua Brickert, Jacob (Allivia Schulik) Brickert, Kaitlin Brickert, Adam Brickert, Caleb Brickert, Zachary Brickert, Noah Brickert, Nathanael Brickert. Faith Brickert, Scott Shula, Grace Shula, Lillian Shula, Olivia Allred, Addison Shula, Matthew Shula, Jr., Emerson Shula, Alexander Miller, Ryan Miller, Emily Miller, Tyler Miller, Abigail Clancy and Benjamin Clancy; great-grandchild Brighton Brickert; sister Marian (Robert) Knotek; other relatives and many friends. Joan will always be remembered for her love of life, her undeniable strength and how she was always her kids and grandkids biggest fan. We know she is cheering for us from heaven but will be greatly missed. We love you, Mugs.
