Joan (Miller) Wiese was born February 12th 1939 in rural Benton County Minnesota, the eleventh child of fifteen born to Leo and Theresa (Fliegle) Miller. The family later moved to Foley, then on to Grasston Minnesota. As a young woman, Joan headed to Minneapolis where she worked for a family, caring for their children and helping with household duties. Her employer soon discovered Joan had additional talents, and offered her work in the family florist shop, which allowed her to express her artistic abilities.

It was in Minneapolis that Joan met Harold Wiese, and they were married in 1959. As Harold's job required, they moved often in their early years, going from Minnesota to Montana, then on to Washington before arriving in Oregon and making Portland their home. By then their family had grown to include their six children; Patty, Karen, Bryan, Mark, Randy and Lisa. Their children grew up and started families of their own, blessing Joan with many grandchildren and great grandchildren, and a growing family to love and care for.

In addition to raising her own children, Joan started a daycare, bringing still more children into her home. She would later volunteer at a school for teenage mothers, rocking babies while their mothers were in class. Joan was never idle; her most recent undertaking was making dresses for young girls in Haiti following a devastating earthquake, then for girls in other countries as well.

Over the past several months Joan battled her illness with the same strength, perseverance, positive attitude, and sense of humor for which
we all knew and loved her. Joan passed away in her home in Portland on her favorite day of the year, Christmas Eve, 2017 surrounded by the Loving Family she had created.
