Joe D. Hays, 86, a lifelong resident of Appleton, died Sunday, April 17, 2011, at Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center.
He was born February 6, 1925, at Appleton to Floyd and Nora Gabrielle Hays. He attended the Rehoboth Assembly of God at Buttermilk and was a cattle farmer. He enjoyed hanging out at the Appleton Store visiting with his neighbors and when his grandchildren were young, teaching them to drive on his tractor. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Ray, Cecil and R. G. Hays; and two sisters, Cleo Goodall and Ila Mae McGee.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Drucilla Barton Hays of Appleton; a son and daughter-in-law, Charles D. and Gloria Hays of Florissant, Missouri; a daughter, LyDonna Carter of Appleton; a sister, Verlan Freeman of Atkins; a sister-in-law, Virginia Hays of Atkins; six grandchildren, Kevin Hays and his wife, Liz, of Jacksonville, Florida, Trevor Hays of Pottsville, Scott Hays of Dover, Denise Robertson of Appleton, Wendy Hogan and her husband, Kevin, of Pottsville and Rebecca Myrick of Russellville; nine great-grandchildren; numerous nephews and nieces; and other relatives and friends.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 20, 2011, at Shinn Chapel with the Rev. James Chronister officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Zion Cemetery near Jerusalem under the direction of Shinn Funeral Service.
Pallbearers will be Trevor, Scott and Kevin Hays, Kevin Hogan, Tyler Robertson and Dale Stroud.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.
