John Aker Girard, Sr, age 79, of Preston, CT peacefully entered into eternal life on March 8, 2017. He was loved by everyone including his family and countless friends and will always be remembered as a kind and humble man. Born August 15, 1937, in Billings, Montana, he was the son of the late John "Jack" and Frances L. (Aker) Girard.
John worked for the State of CT aeronautics department for 22 years as the chief engineer. Upon retirement from the State in 1980, he took up the business of restoring and operating vacation destinations such as Blue Meadows in Noank, CT and the Shoals in Harwichport, MA. John "retired" from these endeavors in 1990 to spend time with his family. Family was his true love and he enjoyed spending time with them. John loved being by the water and enjoyed both fishing and boating. In his spare time he also enjoyed helping others and was an active member of numerous local church and service organizations. John has always had a strong faith in God and most recently, been a faithful member of the Bishop Seabury Anglican Church.
He is survived by his loving wife of 17 years, Maria (Marsala) Girard ; along with two sons; John Jr (Cathy) of Pawcatuck, CT, and Michael (Shelley) of Glassboro, NJ; 3 grandsons, Joshua (Ali), Patrick (Jess) and Christopher (Kait); five siblings, Michael Girard (Joanne Sipala) of Old Lyme, CT, William (Arline) Girard of Franklin, CT, Peter Girard (Jean Borre) of Las Vegas, NV, Margaret Willency of Allentown, PA and Mary Bryant of Fort Worth, TX; and many other loving nieces, nephews and relatives. John was preceded to eternal life by his first wife of 40 years Dottie Louise (Trask) Girard.
Calling hours will be held from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, March 12, 2017, at Lee Memorial United Methodist Church, 294 Washington St, Norwich. A service to celebrate the life of John will follow immediately after the calling hours at the church. All are invited to a reception in the church hall following the service to share memories of his life.
