John B. Capogreco, born November 1, 1936, died at the age of 80 on October 31st 2017 of heart disease. Carmen his beloved wife of 52 years was at his side. John was born and raised in Sacramento where he stayed and built his life. John started work for the railroad at 17 and after serving in the Army, he landed a job with the Sheet Metal Workers Union Local 162 where he was a skilled craftsman and then served as President , Business Agent and then Business Manager until he retired in 1994. John was on the Executive Council of the Western States Sheet Metal, the Sacramento Joint Apprenticeship Committee , the State of California Apprenticeship Committee and was active in democratic politics on the state level. John was a good union man, and was the first to speak positively about how much the union did for his family and for the families of his members. John enjoyed his many travels throughout the U.S. and most recently his travels with his family members to meet his relatives in Sicily, Italy. His many years of hunting and fishing in his leisure time, with his faithful dogs, brought joy to him, and to his friends and family who enjoyed his catch. John was a gentle man, with a wonderful sense of humor who brought pleasure to all those around him. John was a talented woodworker, and he and Carmen spent countless hours together designing and building art projects for their family and friends, which will be constant reminders of his kind and generous soul. In addition to Carmen, John leaves brother Frank (Lupe), sister Katherine, an extended family, brother in law Gary, his close friends Kathy and Doug and daughter Allie, and his large number of friends and colleagues. He was predeceased by his son Kevin, brother Peter and sister Mary Jane. A viewing will be held at Nicoletti Funeral Home on 5401 Folsom Blvd., Sacramento on November 17, 2017 from 5-7pm. Services will be held November 18, 2017 at 10am at Nicoletti's. Flowers can be sent to Nicoletti Funeral Home or donations in John's honor can be made to SPCA Sacramento.
