COLUMBIA - John C. Rogers, 94, of Columbia, entered into eternal rest on November 6, 2017 after a brief illness.

Born on October 10, 1923 in Marion, S.C., he was the son of the late Shepherd “Shep” Rogers and Minnie Williams Rogers. John grew up at the Epworth Orphanage in Columbia. Soon after graduating from high school, he entered the US Army Eighth Air Force to serve in World War II. He served bravely with the 490th Bombardment Group in Eye, England. After the War, John met his wife, Dorothy Amick, and they were married on April 10, 1948 and started their family. An avid Gamecock fan, he graduated from the University of South Carolina and began a long and successful federal career as Chief Deputy Clerk of the U. S. District Court of South Carolina. He was a quiet and humble man, who cherished his wife and family. He was an example of goodness and unbounded love throughout his life. His quick wit and friendly demeanor made him a great friend to those who were privileged to know him. He loved his Lord and his church, and served as deacon at Covenant Presbyterian Church. In his later years he worshiped at First Presbyterian Church.

John is survived by his wife of 69 years, Dorothy Amick Rogers; four children, John Wayne Rogers (Beth) of Columbia, Shirley Rogers Cooper (Dan) of West Columbia, Robert “Bobby” Olin Rogers (Janeen) of Columbia, and Kevin Lee Rogers (Glenda) of Lexington; brother, Howard D. Sloan (Fay) of Dillon. His long life enabled him to enjoy many nieces and nephews, 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, affectionately known to them as their “Pop Pop.” In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sisters, Dorothy Graham Thomas and Mary R. Ford.

Funeral services will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Columbia SC at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 9, 2017. The family will greet family and friends at a visitation at 10:00 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. at the church prior to the service. Burial will be at Greenlawn Memorial Park. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.

Memorials may be made to Epworth Children’s Home or Laurel Crest Endowment Trust, 100 Joseph Walker Drive, West Columbia, SC 29169.
