John Edward Oney, 76, of Charleston, passed away at home, April 8, after a long bout with multiple ailments. A beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother, he was surrounded by family when he died.

Born November 1, 1940, the eldest child of James Leighton Oney, a chemical engineer, and Faith (Tandy) Oney, a registered nurse, John grew up in South Charleston, and graduated high school there in 1959.

A 1962 graduate of West Virginia State College in Institute, he was an engineering technician for the state department of highways (structures division) for 31 years, retiring in 1997. Three years later, he took a position as a driver for Enterprise Rental Car and retired again in 2012.

He married Priscilla “Prudy” Pauley, June 6, 1964, and during the next eight years welcomed three children while living in St. Albans and Hurricane.

Serious health issues with his kidneys, lungs, heart and spine proved occasional obstacles to John’s physicality, but he remained active into his 70s. He enjoyed golf, photography, trains of all sizes, firearms of all types, hunting, reloading ammunition, frequenting local gun ranges, and working on his HO scale model railroad.

John served as a deacon at Mount Vernon Baptist Church in Hurricane in the 1980s and at Oakwood Baptist Church in Charleston since the early 1990s, when he moved the family into his mother’s house in Charleston, to help care for her in her final years as she dealt with health issues.

He is survived by his wife, Prudy; children, David (Jill), Laura (Kevin) Withrow, and Randy (Robin); brother, Robert; grandchildren, Hunter and Meghan Oney, Natalie (Michael) Triveri, Logan Withrow, Mollie (Luke) Mullins, and Sierra, Kaylee and Sydney Oney.

He is preceded in death by his parents, James Leighton and Faith (Tandy); and a sister who died at birth.

A private family committal and entombment service will be held at Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes.

A celebration of John’s life will be held 1:00 p.m. Thursday, April 13, 2017, at Oakwood Baptist Church, 855 Oakwood Road, Charleston, with the Rev. David Moutz and the Rev. Ron Stoner officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in John’s name to Oakwood Baptist Church, 855 Oakwood Road, Charleston, West Virginia 25314.

The Oney family thanks the people of HospiceCare for helping make John’s last days as comfortable as possible.
