John E. Mitchell, 63, of Dallas passed away November 8, 2017.

A graveside service will be held Tuesday, November 28th at 9:30 am at Grove Hill Cemetery, 3920 Samuell Blvd, Dallas, TX 75228 for oil and gas professional John E. Mitchell. A memorial service with reception will follow at 11:00 am that day at First United Methodist Church of Richardson, 503 N. Central Expressway, Richardson, TX 75080.

John was born in Buffalo, NY and moved to Garden Grove, Calif., prior to settling in the Dallas area as a teen. He was the founder of Athena Resources, an oil and gas exploration company, which he led for more than 30 years. He was a private pilot and held an instrument flight rating. John was a fishing enthusiast who traveled and fished in many different countries.

For more than 40 years, one of John’s greatest pleasures came from music, both as a listener and as a performer. He was a member of BYO Musicians, a local musical charity group. As a result of the special role of music played in his life, a celebration of his life provided by his friends and bandmates is being planned for December.

Unknown to most of his colleagues and friends was John’s lifelong battle with bipolar depression, a topic he found difficult to discuss with more than a small group of family members and friends. He did all in his power to fight back and be healthy for both his family and himself in a world where mental health issues rarely are able to be discussed in the same manner as physical challenges. John was a man who worked to be generous to others, whether well-known or unknown, leading those in his inner circle to give back to him in a last act of love by speaking out about the challenges John experienced with this disease and his valiant fight against it until the very end.

John was preceded in death by father and mother Edwin Joseph Mitchell, Jr and Mildred Louise (Fenwick) Mitchell, and by stepfather John Joseph “Jack” Nietmann. He is survived by spouse Linda (Juberg) Mitchell, sons Blake and Miles, mother-in-law Mary "Gene" Foy, sister Millie Mitchell, and cousins Judy and Kennon Hetlage, Tracey and Herbie Jeffords, sister-in-law Marilyn Kelley, brother- and sister-in-law John and Kathryn Klein, brother- and sister-in-law Howard and Judi Teaze, nieces and nephews John Mitchell, Grayson Kelley, Skylar Duvall, Cerissa and BJ Ferguson, Karina and Mike Branch, Chelsey Klein, Natalie and Emily Teaze, as well as by many great nieces and nephews and cousins.

Mother Teresa once wrote “Small things when done with great love can change the world.” This was how John lived his life. It brought him much joy to complete acts of kindness both random and planned at every opportunity.
