John Elwin Haraughty, Jr. of Harrisonburg, formerly of Amherst, died Tuesday October 31, 2017 at Bellaire Assisted Living in Harrisonburg. Mr. Haraughty was born August 2, 1924 in Chetopa, KS, the son of the late John E. Haraughty, Sr. and Isa Edith Jarmen Haraughty.

John graduated from Lawton High School and served his country in World War II and the Korean War. He pursued many interests in his life: completing law school, serving as a justice of the peace, owning a restaurant, completing seminary studies and becoming an ordained minister. He joined the Episcopal Church Army in 1965 and was posted to Baltimore as Director of the Mid-Town Churches Community Association. He moved to Amherst, VA in 1968 and was pastor of St. Paul's Mission until his retirement in 1997. John and his wife Kay deeply loved the congregation and they quickly became like family. Unable to accept retirement, he worked for several more years as community outreach coordinator for Job Corps.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Londa Kathryn (Kay) Amburn Haraughty, three children, John Elwin Haraughty III (Karen), of Tulsa, OK, Susan Haraughty Koch (Michael) of Harrisonburg, VA, and Patrick Kevin Haraughty of Mt. Olive, NC.

In addition, he is survived by one sister, Letha Haraughty Seymour, of Amherst, seven grandchildren: Rebecca, Christopher, David, Michael, Brian, Matthew, Kathryn, and numerous great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two bothers and four sisters.

At the time of his death, he was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church in Amherst. He remained a faithful friend of St. Paul Church, the Bear Mountain Community, and the Monacan Nation.

A celebration of John's life will be held November 11, 2017 at 11:00 AM at St. Paul Episcopal Church, 815 Kenmore Rd, Amherst, VA, 24521, with Pastor Don Moore officiating.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial donation to St. Paul Episcopal Church.
