Dr. John Ernest Lisonbee, 67, passed away on May 19, 2015 after a long battle with cancer. He was born on November 10, 1947 in Mesa, Arizona to Ernest Lisonbee and Opal Sabin . John grew up in Mesa, Arizona and graduated from Mesa High School in 1966 with numerous athletic awards and records. He declined a football scholarship so he could serve a two year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, in the Cumorah, New York mission. After returning from his mission John attended Brigham Young University's pre-med program and was accepted to medical school in 1973. John became Dr. Lisonbee in 1977 graduating from Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine. Then he served his country as a flight surgeon in the United States Air Force achieving the rank of Major. In 1985, Dr. Lisonbee went into private practice in southern Colorado serving the communities of Aguilar, Walsenburg, and Trinidad. He specialized in obstetrics and gynecology, performed countless surgeries and delivered hundreds of children in the southern Colorado region. He was an avid sports, firearm, music, history and aviation enthusiast and held a commercial pilot certificate. John was preceded in death by his parents Ernest and Opal Lisonbee, his daughter Jennifer Lisonbee and his sister, Susie Dennee. John is survived by his children Phillip (Angela Grace) Lisonbee, Douglas (Jane-Marie) Lisonbee Craig Lisonbee, Michael (Ashley) Lisonbee, Emily (James) Bullock, Laura Lisonbee, Wyatt (Ashley) Lisonbee. His brothers Larry, (Dee), Lisonbee and Jerry (Sharon), Eldridge and his sister Sherry Hendrickson. He is also survived by 11.5 grandchildren and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints at 615 Walsenburg Avenue, Walsenburg, Colorado on Monday, May 25 at 1 p.m. An additional service will be held in Mesa, Arizona beginning at 10 a.m. on Thursday May 28 at the LDS Church on 848 North Westwood Boulevard. Visitation to begin at 9 a.m. The family has asked that in lieu of flowers memorial donations be made to the MD Anderson Cancer Center at http://gifts.mdanderson.org
