John was born March 17, 1919 to Mary (Grecco) and Peter Ferro in Roslyn, Washington. He attended Roslyn schools. As a young boy he lived with his Grandmother, Catherine Grecco who had a small dairy farm with 60 milk cows. John milked the cows twice a day, drove them to the pasture on his horse, Star, and made milk deliveries by horse drawn wagon. His delivery route included the Bednar family home, which is where he met his future wife.

John married the love of his life, Agnes Bednar on January 17, 1941. They were happily married for 73 years. They had 3 children: sons Del and Duane, and daughter, Susan. They were blessed with 7 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and 3 great, great grandchildren.

As a young man, John went to work in the coal mines. He worked in No. 3, No. 5, and No. 9. John was in the elite group of rope riders. His knowledge of coal mining was extensive. Many interviews were recorded and quotes printed in many books. He gave oral presentations at Suncadia (which is the actual site of No. 9 mine), the city library, and spent many hours guiding tourists through the mining section of the Roslyn Museum. John had the honor of being the first "King Coal" in 1999 at Roslyn's annual celebration.

When the mines closed, John went to work as a mechanic at the Union 76 Station and Ford garage. From there, John worked on the County Road department driving truck. Many local residents will remember him plowing out their driveways in the winter snow.

John was a lifetime member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Roslyn, and was also a long time member of the Roslyn Volunteer Fire Department.

While the filming of Northern Exposure took place in Roslyn, John and his wife Agnes were seen in many episodes as "extras" as was their 1952 Ford pickup.John will be missed my many.He was preceded in death by his parents, Mary (Grecco) and Peter Ferro, his sisters, Eleanor Wohler and Phiene Lumaco.

John is survived by his wife, Agnes, son Del and Sharon Ferro, son Duane Ferro, daughter Susan and Ed Beedle, 7 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and 3 great, great grandchildren.
