On Friday, January 5, 2018, John Frank Arthur died at Georgetown University Hospital after a short battle with pulmonary fibrosis. He is survived by his sister, Mary Lynne Arthur, as well as his nieces, Christina Marchetti and Andrea Johnson, and nephew, Walter Johnson.

He was born on October 22, 1943 in West Point, New York. He spent most of his formative years in Mexico City, moving to the United States when he was 16 to attend Blair Academy. He then attended American University, but interrupted his studies to join the U.S. Army and serve his country in Vietnam. During his Vietnam service, he earned a Bronze Star, an Air Medal, and several other commendations. He left the Army in 1971 as a Sergeant. For the rest of his career, he worked for the state of Maryland with the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, where he served for over 25 years. The latter part of his life was dedicated to caregiving for his mother and then his sister.

He spoke fluent Spanish, was a gifted singer and guitarist, and was extremely generous.
