John Howard Kuykendall, a life-long resident of Houston, TX, passed away on November 4, 2017, surrounded by family at Houston West Methodist Hospital.
John was born on January 4, 1945, in Brownwood, Texas, to John Samuel Kuykendall and Loretta Wittenburg Kuykendall. The family moved to Houston when John was two years old. John graduated from Mirabeau B. Lamar High School in Houston, and he received his bachelor's degree from Texas Tech University in 1967. He also received a J.D. degree from the South Texas College of Law in Houston. Prior to his retirement, John was a commercial banker for many years and later was a practicing attorney.
John married Joyce Franklin Swafford in April of 2010.
He was preceded in death by both parents. John is survived by wife, Joyce, and sons John Samuel Kuykendall and wife Leslie Ann Kuykendall of Cedar Park, TX, and Glen Alan Kuykendall and wife Katie Griffin Kuykendall of Houston, TX. Also surviving John are grandchildren Eva Kuykendall, Luke Kuykendall, and Cade Kuykendall. Other survivors include a sister, Beth Naiser of Sandia, TX, a brother, Karl Kuykendall of Temple, TX, and a large number of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
John was proud to be a life-long Houstonian and a seventh generation Texan, as well as a member of the St. Cecilia Catholic Church of Houston. John was also a member of the Harris County Bar Association. He was an avid outdoorsman and took pride in passing on this love of the outdoors to both his sons. John truly enjoyed nothing more than his three grandchildren and watching them grow up throughout the years. His grandchildren enjoyed every special moment with him and "Pops" will always hold a special place in their hearts.
A Memorial Service to honor and celebrate John's life will be held Wednesday November 8th at 2:00 pm in The Hunters Creek Chapel at Earthman Funeral Directors, 8303 Katy Freeway in Houston.
