John James Lewis of Manasquan, NJ passed away in Fort Myers on February 22, 2017 at the age of 80. John served 24 years in the United States Coast Guard, serving on the Westwind and Eastwind icebreakers, going to the North and South Poles. He also served on buoy tenders. While still serving in the Coast Guard, John became a telephone technician stationed in NJ, NY and NC, where he retired in 1977. After retiring for a few years, he became a Correctional Officer with Monmouth County Sheriff Department, retiring in 2001. John was a member of the Manasquan First Aid Squad, serving as their Captain for several years. He was a lifetime member of Manasquan Elks #2534, serving as Inner Guard for a year. John enjoyed traveling and being with family.
He is predeceased by his parents, Frank and Margaret (Maggie) Lewis, his sister, Mary Francis McSweeney and his brother, Harry Lewis. John is survived by his wife of 52 years, Marguerite (Gearing) Lewis; sons John C. of Manasquan and Patrick of Fort Myers, FL; daughter, Mary Daidone and her husband Joseph of Manahawkin; grandchildren, Leanna Soden and William Lewis; sister, Eileen Gutierrez and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be on Sunday, March 5, 2017 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm at the Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, 39 South Street, Manasquan, NJ. Mass of Resurrection will be held on Monday, March 6, 2017 at 9:30 am at St. Denis Church in Manasquan. Interment will follow at Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veteran memorial Cemetery in Wrightstown, NJ.
