Following a sudden onset of acute leukemia, John passed into a peaceful sleep on Wednesday, December 27, 2017 with family at his side.
John loved spending time with his family and friends, fishing, hunting, playing fast pitch softball, attending sporting events, travel and reading. He was in the US Army for 3 years, most of which was spent in Germany. John was a cabinetmaker, carpenter and eventually a real estate broker in WI and AZ and a general contractor in AZ. He and Patty lived 20 years in AZ and 10 years in FL before returning to Madison in 2010.
John is survived by his wife of 63 years, Patty (Doyle) and their children and grandchildren: Keary (Melissa) Sullivan and Jennifer (Cody) and Taylor Jacobs; Peggi Dahmen and Tyler (Emilie) Dahmen, Justin Dahmen and Amy Grzenia; Len (Julie) Sullivan and John and Susan; Trish (Brad) Horning and Kyle and Marisa Larson and Caela; brother Jim (Maybelle) Sullivan and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents Len and Madalyn Sullivan; brother Ed (Ginny); sisters and their spouses Marg (Bob) Neesvig (Tom) Starry, Mary (Jim) Reilly and Fran (Don) Schaub. Also preceding him were his parents-in-law Art and Esther Doyle; sister-in-law Rita Sidowski and son-in-law Bruce Dahmen.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Willy and the Staff at Madison VA's Community Living Center and also SSM Health at Home, especially nurses Rachel and Karen, for their compassion and care. John received the Last Rites at the VA Community Living Center as well as a Military Final Salute with family present.
A casual Celebration of John's life will be held at Dahmen's at Hawks Landing in Verona, WI from 1-4 pm on Saturday January 13, 2018.
