John Morris Rogers Jr., 50, left us Sunday, March 26, 2017. His hometown was Williamston NC, but he lived several places, landing finally in Greenville NC. A life-long adventurer, he loved the open sky, the sea and the earth. He also loved animals, and they instinctively loved him. There was always a menagerie of rescues, with the cats benefitting from his custom-made cat trees.

After returning from a year working in Iraq, John fulfilled a lifelong dream and became a pilot and skydiving instructor, eventually opening his own drop zone for a few years. He was so happy and we were all very proud of him. During this time he had reconnected with Elizabeth Rawls Shirley and she brought so much joy to his life and to our family.

John never met a stranger - he made friends with everyone he met, from all walks of life. A first-class raconteur and teller of jokes, he would keep you enthralled and in stitches. He also had a huge heart and a sensitive soul. He went on two mission trips to Israel, and one to Haiti. Those experiences had a tremendous impact on him.

A patriot who loved this country and the Lord, he was not politically correct and proud that he was not. He stood up for the US, our president and Christ and did not care who it bothered.

Mostly though, John loved his family. He was the rock, the champion in our family the past year - going to our parents' house multiple times a day to help our mother care for our bedridden father and handling whatever they needed done. He deeply loved his parents, his daughter, both his sisters, his nephews, his brother-in-law, his girlfriend and her children. He would have done ANYTHING for any of us. And he did, numerous times. He had a tremendous love for his daughter Maggie. From the moment she was born, she was a light and joy in his life.

John was predeceased by his beloved grandparents Frances and Urbin Rogers, and Elizabeth and Roy Manning. Left in heartbreak to remember him and ask why the rest of our lives are his parents Phyllis and Johnny Rogers of Winterville; daughter Maggie Rogers of Chesapeake; sister Fran Wilcox (children Zach and Simon) and her husband FD Wilcox (children Austin and Taylor) of Greenville NC; sister Robin Rogers of Wake Forest; girlfriend Elizabeth Rawls Shirley of Greenville and her children Jordan, Morgan, and Parker. Also left to miss and mourn John are his and Elizabeth's beloved pets - Milo, Skit Skit, Oscar, Wink, Tyson and Max. Plus numerous friends from everywhere he has ever been.

Visitation from 1-2:15 pm on Thursday, March 30 at Biggs Funeral Home in Williamston, NC, with service to follow in the Biggs Funeral Home chapel at 2:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of one's choice.
