John "Jack" Newton Faris, 84, of Amherst passed away Tuesday, January 16, 2018, at Fairmont Crossing. He was the husband of 58 years to Judith "Judy" Martin Faris. Born March 24, 1933, in Charlottesville, he was the son of the late John F. Faris and the late Julia M. Faris.

Jack was a retired senior claims representative for State Farm Insurance Company and a member of Amherst Presbyterian Church. He also served our country in the U.S. Army of Occupation after WWII during 1954-1956 and in the Army Artillery in Germany from 1954-1956, where he obtained the rank of Captain. Jack graduated in 1950 from Lane High School and later from the University of Virginia's Commerce School in 1954. He worked for State Farm Insurance as a claims adjuster for 40 years. Jack was a lifelong UVA fan and supporter, and a member of the UVA Student Aid Foundation and Alumni Association.

Jack was an avid tennis player. He enjoyed travel, especially to Paris, and went to many European countries. Domestically, he frequented Essex, CT and Charleston, SC. He was past president, honorary life member of the Amherst Rotary Club and Paul Harris Fellow. He served as elder of Amherst Presbyterian Church, and was on the board of several civic organizations. Above all else, he loved. He loved his family, he loved his friends and he loved people. When you were with him, you felt important and loved. It will be said of him, "Well done my good and faithful servant."

In addition to his parents, Jack was preceded in death by one daughter, Judith "Robin" Roberta Faris; five siblings, Robert Morrison Faris, Teal Faris Grant, Martha Faris Ware, Julia Faris Travelilian and Caroline Faris Euler.

In addition to his wife, Jack is survived by his daughter, Virginia "Ginger" Faris Weaver (Devin) of Atlanta, GA; four grandchildren, Zachary Martin Weaver, Nathanael Faris Weaver, Rachel Elizabeth Weaver and Sarah Anne Weaver; and numerous nieces, nephews and other loving family members and friends.

A funeral service will be conducted 10:00 a.m., Saturday, January 20, 2018, at Amherst Presbyterian Church with the Rev. John Scholer officiating. Interment will follow at 2:00 p.m. at the Mooreland Baptist Church Cemetery in Albemarle County.

There will be no visitation hours.
