DEER CREEK ~ John Robert Compton, 67, of Deer Creek, passed away at 11:59 p.m. Wednesday, February 4, 2015 at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria.



Born April 4, 1947 in Shelbyville to Johnny Otto and Ruby Cleo (Baker) Compton, he married Mary Ellen Short on December 20, 1969 in Wapella.  He met Mary while both of them were working at Steak-n-Shake.



Surviving are his wife, Mary; three sons, Steven Compton of Deer Creek, Robert (Anka) Compton of Des Plaines, and Dan (Nola) Compton of Savoy; one granddaughter, Grace Compton of Savoy; and two sisters, Pat Hawkins of Florida and Shirley Smith of Peoria.



He was preceded in death by his parents; one infant brother; and one sister, Nancy Dunn.



John was a 1965 graduate of East Peoria Community High School.



A United States Army veteran of the Vietnam War, he served from July 26, 1966 to July 18, 1968. 



John worked at Caterpillar, Inc. for over 40 years, retiring in 2009 as a lift truck driver at the Morton Parts Facility.  After his retirement, he worked as a bus driver for We Care in Morton since August of 2010.



He was a faithful member of Creve Coeur Christian Church, where he was a former deacon and Sunday school teacher for the 1st and 2nd graders.  He also had been active with the Young at Heart Senior Ministries of the church.



John enjoyed tinkering with things, traveling, and working in his yard.  He cherished his family especially his granddaughter, Grace.  He was always willing to help others.



His funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, February 11, 2015 at Creve Coeur Christian Church in Creve Coeur.  The Rev. Nick Oyler and Rev. John Plunkett will officiate.  Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Creve Coeur.  Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Woodlawn Cemetery in Clinton.
