John Sandford Kinchen passed away peacefully with his family by his side on December 12, 2017 at his home in Kingwood, TX. He was born July 20, 1942 in Bellville, TX and graduated from Lake Worth High School in Lake Worth, TX where he was on the basketball and track and field teams. He later graduated from the University of North Texas where he was active in the Baptist Student Union and served a term as president. John married the love of his live, Norma Ruth Reasoner, on February 5, 1966. From May of 1966 to April of 1969 John served in the United States Army and was stationed in Nuremburg, Germany. After returning to the Ft. Worth area, he was hired by the Texas Employment Commission as an appeals referee where he worked from 1971 to retirement in 1997. John had many hobbies over the years including HAM radio, astronomy, camping and fishing, serving his church, and reading. His greatest joy was supporting his children in all of their endeavors, including chaperoning on the marching band bus to away games, serving untold numbers of hot dogs in the concession stand at home games, and becoming very active in supporting his daughter's high school color guard, where he was affectionately referred to as "Daddy K" by all of the members of the guard. His son Travis inherited John's love of the outdoors and they especially enjoyed father / son camping trips to the Guadalupe Mountains and the Gila Wilderness in New Mexico. John truly had a servant's heart. He volunteered in the nursery at First Baptist Church in Hurst for many years. While in Johnson City, he served as a deacon at the First Baptist Church of Johnson City and also served on the Board of Directors for the Johnson City Housing Authority. Later, he became a licensed minister and volunteered as a Chaplain at Methodist Specialty & Transplant Hospital in San Antonio, TX. John loved his family above all else, and that family included the four-legged furry ones, and even a few with feathers, over the years.

John's parents James Carlton Kinchen, Sr. and Dorothy Lillian Sandford Kinchen, and his brother, James Carlton Kinchen, Jr, preceded him in death.

He is survived by his wife of almost 52 years, Norma Kinchen, children John Travis Kinchen and wife Pat of Cedar Park, TX, Jennifer Arthur and husband Jeff of Kingwood, TX, grandchildren Haley Arthur, James Arthur, Cassandra Kinchen, Ashley Campbell and husband Ryan, Travis Lanham and wife Linda, and great-grandchildren Rylee and Callum Campbell.

A celebration of John's life and faith will be held on December 16, 2017 at First Presbyterian Church of Kingwood, where he had been a member since moving to Kingwood in 2015. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to First Presbyterian Church of Kingwood or First Baptist Church of Johnson City.
