John Varvaro

John Varvaro, 94, of Columbia, MO passed away, Wednesday November 15, 2017 at his home. Private family services will be held later.

John was born January 14, 1923 in Brooklyn, NY to Frank and Anna Accari Varvaro. In 1944, he married Margaret Vieira in Oakland, CA. A WWII Veteran, he served just under 3 years in the Army and was stationed in New Guinea as a Medical Technician before he was Honorably Discharged in October 1945.

After his service, he worked in the Bay Area for Richfield Oil Company. In the early sixties, he moved his family to Lamoni, IA where he owned and operated a small Italian restaurant. Moving back west in 1965, he worked for Kaiser Steel as a Warehouse Superintendent in Napa, California. Living in nearby Calistoga, CA he raised a vineyard; selling grapes to major wine producers, and saving enough grapes to make the family’s wine. He retired in 1988, and in 1991 moved with Margaret to Columbia, MO. He enjoyed a long retirement; playing plenty of golf and spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Margaret Varvaro; children, Joyce (Von) Schmidt of Lowry City, MO, Nancy Dickson of Carson City, NV, John (Lynn) Varvaro of Lee’s Summit, MO, Frank (Geraldine) Varvaro of Seattle, WA, Julie (Dennis) Johnson of Clearwater, FL, and James (Janelle) Varvaro of Columbia, MO; eighty-one grand, great, and great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Joseph “Dick,” Frank, Samuel, Vito, and Anthony Varvaro; a son, John Joseph Varvaro, and daughter, Joyce Scarfone.
