East Lyme - John V. Sanchis, 70, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 18, 2016, at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital, surrounded by his loving family and friends.He was born on May 7, 1945, in Bridgeport, to Angela and Jose Sanchis. John graduated from Bullard Havens Regional Technical School in Bridgeport and received a master's degree in biomedical engineering from the University of Connecticut, Storrs, being the first of his family to receive a college education.John worked for the Navy Underwater Warfare Center (NUWC) for 38 years, having retired three years ago. While at NUWC he was a mentor for inner city students and his colleagues, having developed a substantial amount of training materials. At NUWC he conducted many tutorials and published numerous technical papers, being a strong writer. He always helped his younger work colleagues and never asked for credit for his contributions. He also worked on sonar for submarines and surface ships during his tenure with NUWCDIVNPT. He had an incredibly strong work ethic while always making time to be with his family.He highly valued the importance of a college education making sure both his daughter's went to college and were independent. He always reminded his family and friends about the importance of flossing, eating healthy and eliminating unnecessary salt and sugar. He was an avid jogger, having helped develop the cross country youth program for East Lyme and helped coach his daughter's with cross country running. Often times he was listening to Elvis, Bob Dylan and Pete Seeger, singing their songs while dancing with his family.John met the love of his life when he was 16 years old, they married when they were 21, and waited until 27 to start a family. This past August they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with family and friends. He had two beautiful daughters, that he was so proud of and always bragged about.He is survived by his wife, Marceline Sanchis; his two daughters, Desiree and Angela Sanchis; his son-in-laws, John Apes and Craig Conway; his three grandchildren, Lindsey and Jacoby Apes and Chase Conway. He is survived by his two sisters, Maria Dolores Zachornacy and Barbara Sanchis; and brother, Joseph Castendo.Please join us for a celebration of life at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, 2016, at Flanders Fish House & Restaurant, 22 Chesterfield Road, East Lyme.In memory, donations may be made to Citizens Bank for the "John Sanchis college scholarship fund".
