John Wendell Haney, 87, of Milan, passed away, Friday, August 28, 2015 at Avonlea Cottage.
Funeral services will be held at 10AM, Tuesday, September 1, 2015 at Hodgson Funeral Home. Visitation will be held from 4-7 PM, Monday August 31, 2015 at the funeral home with a Masonic Service at 6:30PM. Burial will be in the National Cemetery, Rock Island. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Antioch Baptist Church, Reynolds, or to Shriners Hospital for Children. Online condolences may be left at
John was born on April 14, 1928 in Aledo, IL the son of John Henry and Emma Mathilda (Murdock) Haney. He married Betty Marie Waggoner on June 7, 1950 in Marston, IL. She preceded him in death on June 2, 1999.
He graduated from Aledo High School and later received an Associates Degree from Black Hawk College. J.W. was a veteran of the Korean War and was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge. He retired as a Captain from the Illinois Army National Guard 123rd Field Artillery. J.W. retired in 1985 as an Equipment Specialist Supervisor with the Tank Automotive Command at the Rock Island Arsenal after 32 years of Federal service.
J.W. was very active in many organizations including: 50 year and life member of Masonic Lodge #679, Buffalo Prairie and Trio Lodge #57, in Rock Island; past Governor, Administrator and Pilgrim Degree at Moose Lodge #190, Rock Island; Kaaba Shriner, Davenport; Black Hawk Shrine Club; Order of Eastern Star; Andalusia Chapter #617; Rock Island Elks #980; Korean War Veterans Association; American Legion Post #1166, Reynolds; Mohassen Grotto, Davenport; the Valley of Moline Scottish Rite; and Baptist Antioch Church, Reynolds. He also loved to play golf and organized various tournaments. He wintered in Texas with his wife. His grandchildren held a very special place in his heart and brought him great joy.
Those left to honor his memory include: children, Michael (Helen) Haney, East Moline; Richard (Cathy) Haney, Rock Island; grandchildren Elizabeth (Michael) Gorman, Coal Valley; John W. Haney, Franklin, IL; Megan Haney and Matthew Haney, both of Indianapolis; great grandchildren, Anthony and Eleni Gorman; sister, Barbara Evans, Davenport; and special friend, Mary Lloyd, Milan.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Betty.
