God Bless Command Sargent Major Retired Jose Ramon Aponte

Jose passed away at 12:35 pm on Thursday October 12, 2017. Jose was 85 years old.

Jose served with Honor 31 years in the US Army and was a war veteran of 2 wars. He was part of the infamous 65th Infantry that fought in the Korean War in 1952. He was injured and received the Purple Heart for his brave Service. The 65th Infantry was named the Borinqueneers. 60 years later President Obama recognized their bravery and awarded them The Congressional Gold Medal. Jose received his 2 years ago.

After Korea, Jose served in the Vietnam War from 1967 to 1969 and returned to Ft Hood Texas. He retired in 1982 as a Command Sargent Major. Those who served with him referred to him as a giant of a person, a leader, a coach, and a mentor. He was like a second father to 100's of soldiers.

After retiring, Jose spent 25 years as a counselor for Central Texas College. During this role he coached and helped 1,000's of students and soldiers on how to develop a career and get an education. He was loved by his students, by the College, and by his fellow employees.

Jose loves his family and his friends. He was a rich man with friends and family. The most generous person anyone has ever met and he loved to help.
He is survived by his beautiful wife of 63 years marriage Carmen Lydia who was by his side always and his loving children Lydia Brofer, Jose and his wife, Mary, and Edgar and wife, Amanda. Jose had 4 Grand- children; Corey, Jason, Brad, and Jenny. He had 5 Great Grand Children; Ethan, Nolan, Felix, Derrik, and Gavin.

Jose grew up with a family of 15 brothers and sisters and he is survived by his brothers Ramon and Pellito.

God bless Jose. A true war hero. If you read this stand and salute a great solider, a great husband, a great father, and a great employee.

A time of visitation will be held on Monday, October 16, 2017 from 5:00 PM - 8:00 PM at Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home Killeen. An 10:00 AM Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, October 17, 2017 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Burial will follow in the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery with full military honors.
