loving husband, father, and grandfather, went to be with the Lord on November 18, 2017. He was born on January 30, 1926 in Orange, NJ to Ada Elizabeth Browning Paul and Joseph Clarence Paul. He grew up in South Orange, NJ and spent summers in Sea Girt, NJ where he worked as a boardwalk attendant during tourist season and cleaned oil off the beach from ships sunken by German U-Boats off the shore during World War II. After graduating from South Orange High School in 1944, he attended Colgate University and graduated from Dartmouth College in 1947. He and Elsie were married on October 28, 1950, shortly before he was called by the Navy to serve in the Korean War. After his active service in the Navy, he remained in Naval Reserves until 1959. He started his civilian career working briefly for the Pennsylvania Railroad in Boston, MA before starting what would be a 32-year long career with Shell Oil Company in New York City in 1956 as a transportation analyst. After living in New Jersey for 14 years, Shell Oil moved its headquarters to Houston, bringing Joe and Elsie and their two children to Houston in 1970. Joe retired from Shell in 1988. Joe loved music. Before moving to Texas, he played the bass fiddle in a swing band. Once in Houston, he sang in the choirs at Tallowood Baptist Church, Evangelistic Temple, Second Baptist Church, and Sugar Land Baptist Church. He supported his children's activities, helping to coach their various sports teams, taking bike rides, and playing chauffeur. He loved fishing, doing yardwork, watching and riding trains, and Big Band Music. Once grandchildren came along, Peepaw faithfully attended their sporting events and generously supported their higher education. He took his children to many Astros' games in the Astrodome, enjoying the nachos there and instilling a love of baseball in them. He was generous with his time and his finances, always looking for a way to help others. He was preceded in death by his wife of almost 57 years, Elsie Paul, and is survived by his brother Edward L. Paul of Sea Girt, NJ, son David (Jan) of Sugar Land, TX, his daughter Laura (Dave) of Glendale, AZ, and his grandchildren Elizabeth Paul, Katherine Price (fianc Thomas Walter), James Paul, Rachel Price, Jonathan Price, and Allison Price. Visitation will be held from 6 PM to 8 PM Monday, November 20 at The Settegast-Kopf Co. @ Sugar Creek. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 Tuesday, November 21 at Sugar Land Baptist Church, 16755 Southwest Freeway, Sugar Land TX, 77479.
