Joseph Stephen Pipan, also known as Pop-pop, passed from this life to the next on Saturday October 21, 2017 at the age of 81 after a brief battle with leukemia. He was born at home in Nanticoke, Pennsylvania. He worked his way through Wilkes College as a musician, playing the accordion in a polka band. After college, he was employed as a systems analyst for the Department of Defense where he spent most of his career. He also earned a Master's in Business Administration at Western Michigan University. He began what he would consider his most fulfilling accomplishment in 1960, with his marriage to Marie Teresa Zonko of Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania. They raised five children in Battle Creek, Michigan and Falls Church, Virginia. He began his second career as Pop-pop with the birth of his first grandchild in 1990. Ten more grandchildren followed. Pop-pop took joy in the simple pleasures of love and life. He had a gift for making others feel special.

He is survived by his five children: Mary, Joseph, Michael, Catherine and John and eleven grandchildren: Anne Marie, Simon, Joseph, Connor, Emily, Rachel, Michaela, Brendan, Michael, Matthew and Julia. He is predeceased by his wife Marie.

Funeral services will be at St. James Catholic Church, Falls Church, Virginia, on Saturday, October 28, 2017 at 10 a.m. with reception following.
