Joy Ann Graham Butts, 84, of Midland, Texas passed away on September 7, 2017. Joy was born in Dorn, Texas on August 23, 1933 to Gracie Mae and William Oliver Graham. She graduated from Midland High School in 1950. Joy was married to John Butts on June 14, 1953, in Midland, Texas they recently celebrated 64 years of marriage.
As a young woman, Joy worked for the Southwestern Bell Telephone Company, a Midland Ford dealership and as a secretary/receptionist for a Midland doctor. Joy and her husband John owned and operated Signal Television and Radio Repair on West Wall street for 42 years. Joy and John also owned Jax Radio and TV repair on Big Spring Street in Midland.
In her early married years, Joy earned her pilot's license and was a member the 99ers Women's Flying Club. She was one of the first women in Midland County to earn her private pilot's license. Joy was an avid gardener and particularly enjoyed cultivating roses. She was a member of the Midland Rose Society and the American Rose Society. She served as a judge for many local and state level rose shows and events. One her greatest personal achievements was the design and building of a rose garden for the City of Midland. Joy was also a published poet and spent countless hours perfecting her craft. She attended Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene (TX) for 2 years and attended Midland College for several years taking Creative Writing courses. The professors of Midland College's English department quickly became her mentors and life long friends and encouraged her writing for many years. She has written over 200 poems and short stories. She had a lifelong love and respect for all animals. At any given time, you may have found a fox, a chicken, a dog and a cat living peacefully in her garden.
Joy is preceded in death by her parents, W.O. and Grace Graham; sister, Barbara Grace Graham Moss; and brother, J.W. Graham. She is survived by her husband John Butts, son, Bob and daughter in law, Karen of Midland; Lisa Van Winkle, daughter, of Las Cruces, NM and son, Richard and daughter in law Sue, of Kimbolton, United Kingdom. Her grandchildren include Diana Butts Murray & husband, Bryan (Longview, TX), Lauren Butts Smith & husband, Nathan (Houston, TX), and Thomas Butts and Milly Butts (Kimbolton, UK) and great grandchildren Cayden Kristopher Murray (Longview, TX) and Anabelle Grace Smith (Houston). She is also survived by her sister, Carolyn Graham (Portland, OR) and brother, Peyton Graham (Kauffman, TX).
A memorial service will be held at Ellis Funeral home on Monday, September 11th at 2:00 pm. A gathering will be held at the funeral home immediately prior to the service at 1:30 p.m.
Memorial donations may be made to the Methodist Children's Home, the American Alzheimer's Association or the Midland Animal Shelter.
