Juanita May Jenkins Hughes, 88, a resident of Shenandoah, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2011, at Montvue Nursing Home in Luray.

She was born May 23, 1922, in Shenandoah, and was a daughter of the late Avis Dewey and Irene Belle Gray Jenkins.
Juanita lived all of her life in the Shenandoah area and attended Shenandoah schools. She was a member of First Christian Church in Shenandoah, where she was part of the Christian Women's Fellowship.

During World War II, she worked for a brief time at the Naval Yard in Washington, D.C. She was also a member of the Shenandoah Homemakers Club and enjoyed bowling and camping.

On July 26, 1940, she married William Franklin Hughes, who preceded her in death on July 7, 1968. On March 3, 1979, she married her second husband, Charles Judd, who also preceded her in death on Dec. 7, 1995. A brother, Aldine Jenkins, also preceded her in death.

She is survived by three sons, Ronnie William Hughes and wife, Joan, of Luray, Roger Dale Hughes and wife, Corry, of Jefferson, N.H., and John Steven Hughes and wife, Kathy, of Chesterfield, Va.; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Virginia Prosise of Calverton, Va.; a brother, Russell Jenkins of Waynesboro; and 12 nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends noon to 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 29, 2011, at Lindsey-Kyger Funeral Home in Shenandoah. A funeral service will follow at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Jim Perry officiating. Burial will be at Rest Haven Cemetery.
