June Allebaugh Jones, a force for good in the world, died peacefully on December 18th, cradled with prayer, story, and song by her loving family.

June was born in Broadway, Virginia in 1930, the daughter of the late William Litton and Hazel Ritchie. She was the oldest of four sisters: the late Mary Ritchie Whetzel (Carl) of Broadway, Clara Ann Hinton (Johnny-deceased) of Fulks Run, and Sandy Biller (Wayne) of Broadway.

She graduated from Broadway High School in 1947 and married her sweetheart, Paul Allebaugh, in 1948. June and Paul lived in Lacey Spring on the Allebaugh family farm until their divorce in 1962, when she moved to Harrisonburg with her three sons. She is survived by her sons, Mike Allebaugh of Harrisonburg, Terry Allebaugh (Lori Pistor) of Durham, NC, and Samuel Allebaugh of Powhatan, Virginia; her grandchildren Mike Allebaugh (Michelle) of Staunton, Chad Allebaugh (Karen) of Harrisonburg, Eli Allebaugh of Durham, NC, Jeyhoun Allebaugh of Brooklyn, New York, and Adam Allebaugh of Salem; 8 great-grandchildren, and; a grand host of those who called her friend.

June was a hard worker and often held multiple jobs to support her family. Equipped with letters of reference from their high school principal and a big dose of gumption, June and her best friend, Joan Allebaugh Devier, moved to Richmond immediately after graduating from high school to seek work. June brought that gumption, along with her strong work ethic and irrepressible spirit, to all the jobs she held through the years. She worked as a receptionist for Colony Optical, sold Mary Kay Cosmetics and worked night jobs that included the local bowling alley and various restaurants.

She married Bob Jones (now deceased) in 1972, living in Southwest Virginia and Maryland, and working in Bob's CPA business and a law firm in Washington, D.C.

After returning to the Valley in 2001, June suffered a stroke in 2004 that left her unable to walk and talk. She was a long-term resident of Harrisonburg Health and Rehabilitation Center and a participant in the Generations Crossing program in Massanetta Springs.

Her faith was a core ingredient throughout her life. Nurtured by her mother and grandmother, Clara May Sandy, and the congregation of Broadway Baptist in her youth, she was active in Lutheran churches as an adult, serving as a youth leader for many years. Despite, or perhaps because of her many challenges and setbacks in life, her sense of service to others suffering or in need, was her primary means to express the vitality of her faith. June did not let the sometimes grim reality of everyday life deter her from laughter and joy, and inspired others to follow her lead.

A memorial service and celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. on December 28th at Broadway Baptist Church, 166 Mason Street, in Broadway, Virginia, followed by a reception and lunch at the church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Generations Crossing in honor of June. Checks can be mailed to: Generations Crossing, 3765 Taylor Spring Lane, Harrisonburg, VA 22801.
