Congerville - Karan Rose Kilgus, 66, of Congerville, passed away at 4:02 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 1, 2015, at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.
She was born Aug. 16, 1948, in Springfield, Mo., to Jacob and Margaret (Garner) Rose. She married Rudy K. Kilgus on Oct. 21, 1978, in Morton.
Surviving are her husband of Morton; two sons, Christian Kilgus of Portland, Ore., and Joseph (Michelle) Kilgus of Austin, Texas; one daughter, Gina Kilgus of Austin, Texas; three grandchildren, Erin, Obrey and Marin Kilgus; one great-grandchild, Ellena; and one brother, Ron (Julie) Rose of Bella Vista, Ark.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Karan first worked for Delta Airlines right out of high school. She then worked as a travel agent for the next 40 years until her retirement.
She was one of the original members of the Peoria Area Civic Chorale and loved to sing as well as all of her children. When she and her husband started to raise and show bulldogs, puppy names given were song titles with the prefix as K's Note-A-Bul.
Karan was a member of the Bulldog Club of Greater St. Louis and the Chicago Bulldog Club; Heart of Illinois Cluster; Cornbelt Kennel Club and Division II Bulldog Club. She held offices from secretary to show chairman, counselor in Division II, editor of bulldog newsletters of Division II and newsletter of the Cornbelt Kennel Club.
Raising and showing bulldogs became a passion starting in 1982. As she was showing more than 33 dogs to their championship, she decided judging was the next step. She got approved to judge bulldogs in 1998 with other breeds to follow including Shar Pei, Boston Terriers, French Bulldogs and junior showmanship. Karan and her husband judged shows all over the United States. After showing many bulldogs to their championship, Karan said that she would rather judge than exhibit.
Karan's passion for her children and the bulldog breed kept her very busy, always volunteering to help and chair committees. She will be missed by her family, bulldog friends and furry friends.
