Karin Best Schwedler, originally of Scotia, NY, passed peacefully in her sleep on October 31, 2017 in Sacramento, CA. Karin was born May 25, 1940, to Richard "Dick" Best and Doris Underhill Best.

After graduating from Scotia-Glenville High School, Karin moved to Washington, D.C. to attend Catholic University of America ("CU"). In 1963, she graduated with a B.A. in English. It was at CU where she met Paul Schwedler, with whom she enjoyed a long marriage. Although the marriage ended, they remained friends over the years. Paul was an officer in the Navy, and the couple was stationed in New York City and San Diego before resettling again on the east coast. Along the way, they had three children--Kristin, Paul and Jonathan.

While caring for her children, Karin capitalized on her artistic talents by earning a degree in Interior Design from Mount Vernon College and working in antique shops. In 1990, she moved to Bethesda, MD, where she enjoyed the hustle and bustle of the downtown area and started her own design business. There, she regularly attended mass and delighted in dancing with friends and rooting on the D.C. United soccer team.

Karin immensely enjoyed her five grandchildren, Jake, Zack, Erika, Luke and Isaac, whom she visited often in Sacramento. In 2007, she moved to Sacramento to be closer to her children and grandchildren.

Karin was compassionate and tenderhearted. She was an adoring, patient, giving mother to her children, with whom she shared her love of animals, the beach, the arts, Great Sacandaga Lake, and, most importantly, laughter. That's not to say she didn't wrestle with some personal challenges, including: adhering to the rules of the space-time continuum, containing holiday exuberance, curbing spontaneous public dancing, and avoiding taking excessive delight in embarrassing her children (some of which, obviously, were related.)

Those of us who knew her were blessed by her empathy, kindness, and sense of humor. She will be missed, but her love lives on in all of us.

She is survived by Kristin Hansen and husband Pat Hansen and Jon Schwedler and wife Jen Schwedler of Sacramento, CA; her five beloved grandchildren; brothers Erik Best of Richmond, VA and Aaron Best of Scotia, NY; former husband Paul R. Schwedler and cherished sister-in-law Elaine Schwedler Fitzpatrick, as well as nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, sister Kris Lee of Roscoe, NY, and beloved son Paul C. Schwedler.

Funeral services will be held at St. Frances of Assisi Church in Sacramento, CA on Friday, November 17, at 10 a.m., with arrangements by Nicoletti, Culjis & Herberger Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or your favorite children's charity. We encourage those with memories of Karin's rich life to sign the Memory Book. A small Celebration of Life will take place in the spring of 2018 in the Bethesda area.
