Katherine Wilson Atterbury

On July 26th, Katherine Wilson Atterbury passed away peacefully in her sleep. Born July 22, 1932, Mrs. Atterbury had recently celebrated her 85th birthday with her family.

Mrs. Atterbury was born in Friendship MD to parents Julius Edwin and Mary Katherine Streett Wilson, and spent her early life on the family farm, Trent Hall, attended Southern High School until enrolling and graduating from The Miss Agnes School in Arlington, VA.

While studying in the X-ray Technology Program at Johns Hopkins, she met and married Gerald Atterbury of Annapolis MD in 1951 and subsequently parented four children, Gerald Estep, Jeffrey Wilson, Katherine Ripley, and Elizabeth Louise. The family made their home at Maidstone Farm in the St. Margarets area near Annapolis amid a large menagerie of dogs, cats, ponies, and dairy cows.

During her life, Mrs. Atterbury was a long time member of the Junior League of Maryland. She assisted in the launch of the Children’s Theater of Annapolis and was the first District Commissioner of the Annapolis Pony Club, an affiliate of the U.S. Pony Club.

Other community service activities included volunteer work with the Annapolis Opera and providing respite companionship for the terminally ill.

Mrs. Atterbury was an accomplished home chef and avid gardener and her skills in the kitchen instilled a love of cooking in her children.

In her later years, she shared a home with her daughter, Katherine Ripley in Tracey’s Landing MD.

Mrs. Atterbury’s former husband Gerald and son Jeffrey preceded her in death. She is survived by three of her children, Gerald E. Atterbury of Plymouth MA, Katherine R Atterbury of Tracey’s Landing, and Elizabeth L. Stapf of Arnold MD. She is also survived by her sister, Julia Gay of Annapolis and three nieces.

The family will be hosting and informal gathering on Sunday July 30 from 2 to 4 PM at the John Taylor Funeral Home at 147 Duke of Gloucester St, Annapolis MD and invite all of their mother’s friends and extended family to attend and share their memories of Katherine.

Interment will be at St. James Parrish, 5757 Solomon’s Island Rd, Lothian on a date to be determined.
