Frances Katheryn McCurry Howell was born on November 4, 1923 in Ruston Louisiana. She was the only daughter of Chessie Lawter McCurry and Susie Belle Lamkin McCurry. Katheryn was the middle child. She had 2 older brothers; Chessie Lawter (Mac) McCurry Jr and wife Shirley, Olin McCurry and Wife Kathleen a younger brother Billy Raymond McCurry and is survived by a younger brother Robert Whitfield (Bob) McCurry and wife Joan, of Cresson, Texas.
Katheryn received Christ early in life and was a lifelong Methodist. Her Uncle was a Methodist circuit rider preacher, and the family often went to hear Uncle Roland preach and see Aunt Carrie. When she lived in Midland she was a member of First Methodist in Midland. Upon moving to Odessa in 1959 she became an active member of First United Methodist Church of Odessa.
Katheryn graduated High School in Edinburg, Texas, she graduated from Stephen F. Austin College in Nacogdoches, Texas, with a degree in Education. She moved to Midland Texas and went to work for Stanolind Oil Company coloring well logs. A friend hook her up on a blind date on New Year's Eve 1946 with this young engineer from Tahoka Texas who had moved to West Texas.
Katheryn was married to Samuel Wade Howell (1921-2012) on May 22, 1948, in Nacogdoches, Texas, at her parents' home. They resided in Midland, Texas, after their marriage until March of 1959 when they moved to Odessa. Katheryn was a mother, a homemaker and an educator. As soon as Sarah was in elementary school Katheryn went to work teaching school, first at Rusk Elementary followed shortly by Ector High School where she taught Math to many many young men and women. She finished her career at Ector Junior High School. While teaching she became active as an ROTC sponsor traveling on Yellow Dogs all over the US, to ROTC Events. She filled in as sponsor where needed for many other events. She also started touring Europe as a youth sponsor of educational tours. Later she and Wade toured the US and parts of Europe together. All you had to say was "do you want to go" and Katheryn would be packed and ready, she loved to travel.
Katheryn and Wade knew no strangers and they loved to have big crowds for Sunday Lunch and holidays. Katheryn referred to them as her family and loved to cook a huge meal for all. No one went home hungry from her home.
Katheryn is survived by her 3 children Samuel Howell II and wife Janie Fowler Howell of Odessa, Susan Howell Curry and husband Jack Curry (deceased) of Waco, Sarah Howell Mazur and husband Michael Mazur of Ruidoso, NM; four grandchildren Samuel Howell III and Katie Conley of Lubbock, Adrianne Mazur Kincade and Travis Lee Kincade of Mansfield, Mary Howell and her dogs Stevie Ray and John Lee of Odessa, Kent Mazur and wife Sarah Myhre Mazur of Houston, as well as six great-grandchildren and a large extended family.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, August 6, 2017 at Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors from 1:00p.m. to 9:00p.m. Monday, August 7, 2017 9:00a.m. to 9:00p.m. Family will be receiving friends from 5:30p.m. to 6:30p.m. Services for Katheryn Howell will be held at First United Methodist Church in Odessa, Texas on Tuesday, August 8, 2017 at 10:00a.m. with Reverends Donnie Williams and Todd Salzwedel officiating, Interment will be in Tahoka, Texas Tahoka Cemetery on Tuesday, August 8, 2017 at 3:00p.m. Pallbearers are Harold McKelvain, Russell Kimble, Doug Mackey, Brian McCurry, Paul Geeslin, and Kyle Womack.
