Kathleen Ann Funk was born on January 20th, 1951 to Robert and Catherine Gailing of Orange, California. She passed away on January 1st , 2016 after her car was struck by a drunk driver a few miles from her home. Kathy grew up in southern California, before moving to Oregon and raising her children in Beaverton and Lake Oswego. She worked selflessly to see that her children had everything they needed to succeed in life, and she was so proud of their accomplishments. Her only wish was for her family to love each other and create a bond that would never be broken. It was clear to everyone who came into contact with Kathy what an incredible mother she was, and how she loved unconditionally all those surrounding her. Kathy loved life. She was an outdoor enthusiast, with endless passions ranging from fly fishing, bird watching, hiking, running, and snowshoeing with her treasured dogs, Murphy and Gabi. Kathy achieved her life-long dream of living in a cabin in the woods on a river when she moved to Welches, Oregon in the summer of 2011. She spent the last several years renovating her cabin into a beautiful home to enjoy with her family and friends. For the last decade she worked as a checker at New Seasons, making the long commute three days a week because she loved her coworkers and seeing friends old and new.

Kathy is survived by her siblings, Richard Gailing, Susan Fox, and Patricia Bolstad; her beloved children Christine, Carolyn, Joe, Patricia, Stephanie and Lizzy, and their father, Thomas Funk, Sr.; her sons-in-law Andrew Ognall and Andrew Vincent; her daughter-in-law Sarah Grenert-Funk; and her cherished grandchildren, Max, Luke, Miles, and Margaret. She is predeceased by her sons Thomas Funk, Jr. and Matthew Funk. A celebration of Kathy’s life will take place on Friday, January 8th from 11:30-1:30 at Union/Pine on 525 SE Pine Street in Portland. All are welcome to join. A private memorial service will be held separately.

The family has established memorial funds in Kathy’s name with two organizations she proudly supported: WaterWatch (waterwatch.org) and Native Fish Society (nativefishsociety.org). Please make donations in lieu of flowers.
