Kenneth Lawrence Byrne was born November 9, 1926 in Callisburg, Texas to Thomas Dewey and Gladys Hubbard Byrne. In his youth, he was baptized into the Christian faith and graduated from High School in Archer City, Texas in 1944. Ken served in the United States Army 1945 to 1947. He was stationed in Germany with the Occupation Army. He worked in various jobs in the oil field all his life. On February 6, 1949, he married Helen Heard at the First Methodist Church in Archer City. Their union was blessed with a son, Stephen, and a daughter, Susan. Ken retired from Union Texas Petroleum as a production foreman. Since then he has operated oil leases in Archer and Young counties. After Helen's death Ken married Ruth King Bird in 2004. Kenneth was a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Levelland. He served as President of the Hockley County Senior Center and was a member of the Levelland Lodge of Freemasons, having served as Worshipful Master. He served over 50 years as a Mason. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved being around all family including Ruth's family members. He was also a tinkerer and handy man around the house. His generosity to family, friends, church and community will be missed. Those of us who knew him will also miss his sense of humor and his colorful way of telling a story. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen, his parents, two brothers (Eugene and Jack), and a sister-in-law, Charlotte Byrne. He is survived by his wife, Ruth; son, Steve (Patti) of Hildreth, NE; daughter, Susan Byrne of Ft. Worth; Ruth's boys; MIke (Belita) BIrd of La Porte, Phil (Brenda) Bird of Levelland, Kirk (Brenda) Bird of MIdland; brother, Darrell (Betty) of Olney, Illinois; sister, Everett (Ronald) Carroll of Iowa Park, Texas; grandsons Anthony (Jill) BIrd of Lubbock, Brian (Connie) Bird of Wolfforth; Sean (Alisha) Byrne of Sarasota, FL, Ryan (Sarah) Byrne of Prosper, TX; granddaughters Stephani Luebben of College Station and Courtney (Steven) Peeler of Hastings, NE, January (Dave) Harper of Albequerque, NM. He leaves twelve great-grandchildren. Ken's heavenly birthday was September 21, 2017. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, September 26, 2017, at 10am at Christ United Methodist Church in Levelland. Interment will follow at the City of Levelland cemetery.
