Lala Baeza Martinez, a lifelong resident of Houston, Texas, passed away unexpectedly on December 9, 2017 at the age of 85.



Lala is survived by her children: son Valentine Martinez Jr., daughter Carolyn Marie Martinez (Like a daughter Evie DeRanieri), son Eddie Martinez, son Henry Martinez, grandson Stephen Corey Parsons, grandson Vincent Martinez, cousin Josephine Delgado, cousin Betty Middleton, and several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her husband Valentine Martinez Sr., son Larry Martinez, her parents: father Felipe Baeza, mother Margarita Lozano Baeza, her siblings: brother Enrique Baeza, sister Mary Rose Baeza, brother Felipe Baeza, brother Felipe Baeza Jr., sister Aurora Baeza, sister Carolina Baeza, her Grandparents: grandfather Martin Baeza, grandmother Maria Valdez Baeza, grandfather Jesus Lozano, grandmother Flavia Rodriguez Lozano, and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.



Lala was born on March 26, 1932 in a pickup truck in Pearland, Texas while traveling to St. Joseph Hospital in Houston, Texas. She attended Marshal Jr. High and Jefferson Davis High school. Lala began working at a 5 & dime store in Laredo, Texas in the customer service industry at the age of 14. She later worked for a Weingarten’s Super Market in the meat department and then was promoted to a cashiering position. While working during the day, she began attending adult high school at night to complete her high school education. It was there that she met her husband Valentine Martinez Sr. Lala married Val on June 21, 1953 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church and they, soon after, began their family. Lala returned to working as a cashier at Foley’s in downtown Houston and later the Sheraton Lincoln Hotel. She also worked at Metal Window Products as an assembler and was promoted to a department manager. She later returned to cashiering and worked for Ramada Hotel, Eckerd Pharmacy and then The Whitehall Hotel until retirement. During retirement she worked as a school crossing guard.



Lala was a devoted wife and mother. She was very involved with her children’s schooling and activities. She was a room mother, a brownie troop leader, and attended numerous PTA meetings and little league games. She was a spiritual lady and a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church. Also, more recently, she enjoyed watching Joel Osteen on television. She was also a member of the Salvation Army Seniors Group for more than 20 years. She loved being around people and was never shy about striking up a conversation with strangers everywhere she went. She was very patriotic and was very proud to be an American. Lala loved to travel to Louisiana to go to the casinos, occasionally. Her favorite TV shows were The Price is Right, Wheel of Fortune, Family Feud, and the Lawrence Welk Show. She also loved to dance and sing. She often told God that when he calls her home, she wants to sing in the choir in Heaven. Lala will be deeply missed by her family, her friends, and all who knew her.



Visitation will be at Funeraria Del Angel Funeral Home located at 901 Main St., Pasadena, Texas 77506 from 7PM-9PM on December 12, 2017. The final viewing and funeral service will be held on December 13, 2017 at St. Patrick Catholic Church located at 4918 Cochran St, Houston, TX 77009. Viewing begins at 9AM. Service begins at 10AM followed by burial at Historic Hollywood Cemetery located at 3506 North Main Street, Houston, TX 77009
