Larry Leon “Poppy” Knapp went to be with his heavenly Father October 10, 2017, at home peacefully surrounded by his loving family.

He was born August 22, 1940, Winifrede, to the late Allie Alderman and Jerald Knapp. Larry was a member of the Winifrede Presbyterian Church, U. S. Army and retired from U. S. Steel.

Larry loved fishing, hunting and Nascar racing, but his greatest treasure in life was time spent sitting in the bleachers watching his children, whether it was football, baseball, soccer, swimming, tennis, volleyball or cheerleading, he loved it all.

Along with his parents, Larry was preceded in death by his grandparents, Stella and Clyde McCormick; son, Larry Deway Knapp; and many other family members.

Survived by wife, Sonja, of 51 years; daughters, Laura and John Pozega, Mechelle and the late John Baldwin; grandchildren, Lauren, Allie, John, Trey and Molly; great-grandchild, Brooklyn Paige; brother, Jerald Ray (Delores) Knapp; sisters, Billie Ruth Rogers and Nancy and Richard Justice; and lots of nieces and nephews.

Many thanks to all the family for their love and support through this long journey, and the nurses and doctors for their care and therapy.

The funeral service will be held 1:00 p.m. Thursday, October 12, 2017, at Winifrede Presbyterian Church, with Pastor Brad Chittendon officiating. The burial will follow the service at Kanawha Valley Memorial Gardens, Glasgow.

A visitation for family and friends will be from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Thursday at the Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Larry’s memory to Winifrede Presbyterian Church, 2919 Fields Creek Road, Winifrede, West Virginia 25214.
