Lavinia Mae Griffith Tilley of Griffith Rd, Winston-Salem, NC, passed away Sunday, November 5, 2017. She was born 28 June, 1934, to Luther Vance and Ruth Robertson Griffith, in her great grandfathers log cabin.
She is preceded in death by her parents Luther and Ruth Griffith, her husband of 64 years Paul David Tilley Sr., daughter Elizabeth Kaye Tilley; and her siblings Mildred Griffith Moser, Russell Griffith, Mary Catherine Griffith Hay, Bernice Griffith Sloan.
She was a member of Marshall Baptist Church and Bethel Methodist Church, and enjoyed being an active resident of the Bethel Community. She was a Colonial descendant of South Fork Township and The Moravian and Dunkard Families, Griffith, Wagoner, Pfau, Burkett, Spach, Berrier, Frey, Binckele, Shutt, Foltz, Zimmerman, Robertson, Haines, Crouch, Glasscock, and Woosley.
Lavinia was a gentle, kind, sweet and loving person, who worked tirelessly, and always put others needs before her own. She gave all of herself to caring for and providing for her family. She will be remembered as one of the finest bakers in the region especially for her Christmas cookies, Moravian Sugar Cake, Chicken Pie and beautiful cakes she made for birthdays, weddings and special occasions. She took great pride in her extraordinary cooking skills which were handed down through generations. She made sure there was always room at the table for one more and that no one ever left the table hungry. She was a master seamstress and quilter winning many ribbons and awards for her work in the local county fair. Lavinia had a love of family, and her heritage and spent untold hours researching genealogy.
During her life she was employed with Hanes Hoisery, Clemmons School, North Carolina Baptist Hospital, Brenner Children's Hospital, and several other local businesses, including Mrs. Hanes Moravian Cookies.
Lavinia is survived by three children Sondra Paulette Reed, Paul David Tilley and Michael Wayne Tilley (Carol). 8 grandchildren. Jordyn, Taylor and Lauren Reed, Brandi Brandon, Misty Cammons (Chris), Adam Tilley, Shane Tilley (Krystal), Milissa Tilley (Kristopher), and Michael Tilley (Marianna). 11 great grandchildren. Hayden Munson & Harper Reed, Beau Chandler Carter, Caleb & Luke Cammons, Erin Tilley, Brycen Tilley, Crystal Eckberg, Mario and Sofia Tilley and Daniel Husel.
She is also survived by her siblings Ralph Griffith, Alice Griffith Smith, Phyllis Griffith Foster, Ethel Griffith and many loving nieces and nephews whom she cherished. Lavinia also leaves behind her devoted loving and caring friend Barbara Smith, as well as many friends, neighbors, and extended family. She will certainly be missed and will forever have a special place in our hearts. She was simply "the best".
A graveside service will be held on Thursday, November 9th at 1:00 pm at the Westlawn Gardens of Memory, 6135 Ridgecrest Rd, Clemmons, NC 27103. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Alzheimer's Foundation of America.
