Leland Edward Washington was born on June 04, 1943 in San Jose, California fourth child of eight children born to the late Luther Bozzaris Washington Sr. and Alberta Coleman Washington.

Leland graduated from San Jose High School and San Jose State University. He proudly served in the United States Army 173rd Airborne and the Vietnam War. Leland was an active member of the American Legion Post 558. Leland was a supporter of the veteran community he and his veteran friend Phil Andrade, started a monthly lunch meeting with other veterans

He was a civil rights activist in the sixties, and was dedicated to securing equal opportunity for minority groups. He also had the opportunity to meet Mohammed Ali, Stokely Carmichael, and Angela Davis during the movement.

Leland attended Solid Rock Baptist church in Oakland as a child, and he joined Antioch Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. C.W. Washington. Leland was an active member in the youth group and sang in the youth choir.

Leland was a very loving father, grandfather, husband and friend. He touched many people with his warm and caring personality and will be remembered with much love and affection by those who had the privilege of knowing him.

Leland worked various companies such as IBM, Frito-Lay; he started his own landscape business W&W Landscape. He retired from his landscaping business, and started working for DHL.

Leland loved fashion and modeled in several nonprofit community fashion shows. He loved going fishing, watching sports, and traveling in the U.S and abroad. He also loved spending quality time with his grandchildren. He loved taking friends and family to his favorite restaurant Bennihana's.

Left to cherish his memory, his wife Sigrun, his 3 sons, Brandon Shabazz (DeAnna) Austin TX, Vincent Washington (Melissa) San Francisco, Leland Washington II (Myleni), San Jose, 2 step sons, Chris Williams (Tracy) San Jose, Frank Williams (Cynthia) Modesto, He also leaves eight grandchildren, Ayana Shabazz, Austin TX, Eric Williams, Modesto, Nicholas Williams, San Jose, Benjamin Williams, San Jose, Lily Washington, San Francisco, Zachary Williams, San Jose, Matthew Washington, San Francisco, and Jaxon Washington, San Jose.

Leland is survived by 2 brothers, Luther B. Washington Jr. (Lettie) Clovis, Bertram Washington, San Jose, and 3 sisters, Joyce Burchett, Oakland, Loretta Strom (Raymond) San Jose, Pamela Kennedy (Robert). San Jose. Preceded in death by his parents Luther Bozzaris Washington Sr. and Alberta Washington, Sister Gloria Broadnax, Vernon James Washington Sr. He's also survived by his many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends that were near and dear to his heart.

A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 PM Saturday July 15, 2017 at Willow Glen Funeral Home 1039 Lincoln Ave San Jose, CA. Leland's final resting place will be at the California Central Coast Veteran's Cemetery at Fort Ord in Seaside, CA.
