Lenard L. Simpson passed away October 1st, 2017 at home in Colbert, WA, just short of his 94th birthday. Born October 18, 1923 in Sumner, Nebraska, he was the third child of 5; 4 brothers, 1 sister; all preceding him in death.
Lenard was raised on a dry corn farm during the Depression. At the height of the Dust Bowl in 1938, with no viable crops, food or income, the family broke up, most heading for Emmett, Idaho for fruit picking jobs. While there, Lenard attended school, but left early to enlist in the Marine Corps in October 1941. Finishing boot camp just two weeks after Pearl Harbor, he then served on Guadalcanal, Saipan, and Iwo Jima. Following the war, Lenard returned to Emmett, and then Yakima, where he completed high school.
Lenard is survived by his wife, Karen, at home, 2 daughters; Diane Robinson, of Puyallup, Heather Shippy, of Spokane, and one son, Doug Simpson of Port Orchard. (One daughter, Karen, preceded him in death). He leaves behind 8 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, and numerous nieces and nephews. Memorial services are planned Saturday, October 14th, 2: pm at Colbert Chapel in Colbert. In lieu of flowers, charitable gifts can be given to Hospice of Spokane.
