Leo D. Knopes, 79, of Rockford, died December 22, 2017 at Lasalle Veteran's Home in Lasalle, IL. Born September 29, 1938 in Janesville, WI to Leslie D. and Mary Ellen (Masterson) Knopes. Leo grew up in Janesville and joined the U.S. Navy after high school. He spent 4 years on a Destroyer Escort ship the Dealy in the Mediterranean Sea. He visited Greece and other ports. He spent his life with computers, first with IBM in Chicago, New York and Philadelphia. Then at Amcore Bank and the Rockford Board of Elections. He graduated from Eastern Illinois University with a Bachelor's Degree. He married Mary Bess Erbentraut on November 18, 1967 in Rockford, IL. Leo enjoyed live threater locally, in Chicago, New York, Toronto and London, England. He enjoyed travel to Hawaii many times and many cruises. He was the Family Rock to his wife, daughter Julie, and son David. He so loved his schnauzer Charlie.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Mary; his daughter, Julie (Brian) Richey of Cambridge, IL; his son, David (Melanie) Knopes of Seattle, WA; brother, Richard (Phyllis) Knopes of Janesville, WI; and five grandchildren, Clifford Richey, Elizabeth Richey, Abigail Richey, Catherine Richey and Charles Richey; many nieces, nephews and special friends. He was predeceased by his parents and sister, Gwen (Wayne) Adams.

Funeral Services at 10 a.m. on Friday, December 29 at Sunset Funeral Home, 8800 N. Alpine Rd, Machesney Park. Visitation from 5 until 8 p.m. on Thursday, December 28 at Sunset Funeral Home.
