Lester E. Fernstaedt, 89, of Loves Park, IL. died Tuesday, September 19, 2017 from complications of Alzheimer's in his home. Lester was born in his home to Herman and Emilie (Krupke) Fernstaedt on March 4, 1928 in Lafayette County, WI. He attended schools in Lena, IL. graduating in 1946. Lester was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in the Korean War stationed in Germany. He established himself as a self- employed businessman, owning and operating Main Food Mart and Village Hardware in Milledgeville, IL. Retired in 2007 at age 80 from Commercial Mortgage & Finance Company. He was a member of Bethesda Lutheran Church in Rockford for many years and then became a member of First Evangelical Coventant Church in Rockford. Lester was a cheerleader for the CUBS and BEARS. He enjoyed the simple pleasures of life; daily walks, travels, playing handyman, and the pure joy of a family card game. Lester was most content when surrounded by his family. United in marriage to Carole Arndt on September 3, 2006.

Survivors: wife, Carole; children, Craig Fernstaedt, Gail Kacin, Lynne (Brian) Defibaugh and their mother, Joan Egeness; step-children, Barbara (Jeff), Diane (Tim), Laureen (Floyd) and Nicholas (Selene); 11 grandchildren; 15 great- grandchildren; brother, Arden (Lois) Fernstaedt. Predeceased by parents; 5 siblings; step-daughter, Cheryl Houldridge.

A life well celebrated service: 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 26, at Sunset Funeral Home 8800 N. Alpine Rd. Machesney Park, IL. Visitation: 2:00 ~ 3:00 p.m. Burial Sunset Memorial Gardens.
