Linden B. "Bert" Smith, Jr., 84, of Augusta, died Thursday, August 9, 2012, at Newton Medical Center. Born and raised in Augusta, Mr. Smith was a lifelong resident of Sussex County; he attended the Octagon School in Frankford Plains and graduated from Sussex High School. Mr. Smith was a dedicated dairy farmer having lent support and leadership to agriculture on local, state, and national levels. He was involved in dairy farming since childhood, leaving only to serve in the Army and Reserve, and then returning to continue the family operation. Mr. Smith led many of the primary dairy associations, including the Sussex County Milk Producers, the Eastern Milk Producers and the Northwest Jersey Milk Producers. He served as a representative to the Garden State Milk Council, the New Jersey Dairy Advisory Council and District 7 of the American Dairy Association, where he was a past director. He was also a member of the Dairy Export Council of the US Department of Agriculture. Mr. Smith was active with the Sussex County Board of Agriculture and the Sussex County Agricultural Society. He was a member of the Frankford Township Board of Education and Planning Board, the Water Quality Committee, the Solid Waste Advisory Committee Mr. Smith was also a member of the Frankford Plains Cemetery Association for 50 years and a master in the Wantage Grange. Mr. Smith was presented with the "Distinguished Service to New Jersey Agriculture" award in 1988. The son of the late Linden B. Smith, Sr, and Olive Anna (Walker) Smith, Mr. Smith was also predeceased by his wife, Marie K. Smith, July 30, 2002; Mr. Smith, Jr. is survived by two daughters, Anna May Walsh and husband, Bob, of Greeley, PA and Martha Little and her husband, Wayne, of Augusta; three grandchildren, Sarah Banci, and husband, George, of Dingmans Ferry; Matthew Walsh of Milford, PA, and Mimely Little of Augusta, NJ; one great-grandchild, Braeden Banci; one sister, Shirley Hill of Augusta; one brother Merlin Smith, of Overland Parks, KS: Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. at the Wood Funeral Home, 16 Main Street, Branchville, NJ. Interment will follow in the Frankford Plains Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Monday from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to The Frankford Plains United Methodist Church, 99 Plains Road, Augusta, NJ 07822 and/or the Sussex County Agriculture Society, PO Box 248, Augusta, NJ 07822.
